Prof. R. Scott Appleby, Ph.D.

R. Scott Appleby (Ph.D., University of Chicago) is Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame, where he also serves as the Marilyn Keough Dean of its School of Global Affairs. Formerly, he served as Director of Notre Dame Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism and as the John M. Regan, Jr., Director of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. From 1988 to 1993, Prof. Appleby was co-director of the Fundamentalism Project, an international public policy study conducted by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His numerous publications include The Ambivalence of the Sacred: Religion, Violence, and Reconciliation and “Church and Age Unite!”: The Modernist Impulse in American Catholicism. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.
