Andrew B. Newberg, M.D.
Andrew B. Newberg, M.D., is the research director at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital in Philadelphia, where he is also a professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. In both the clinical and research aspects of his career, Dr. Newberg has been particularly involved in neurotheology, the study of mystical and religious experiences, as well as in the general study of the mind/body relationship. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles and chapters on brain function, brain imaging, and the study of religious and mystical experiences. His 10 books have been translated into 16 different languages, and the Online Psychology Degree Guide listed him as one of the 30 Most Influential Neuroscientists Alive Today. He has appeared on television programs including StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Nightline, 20/20, and ABC World News Tonight, as well as in the films What the Bleep Do We Know?, Bill Maher’s Religulous, and Awake: The Life of Yogananda. His work has been featured in a number of major media articles including in Newsweek, Time, National Geographic, the New York Times, O Magazine, and the London Observer.
